There are presently two systems for measuring the energy performance of new windows and doors. These will be either U Values or Window Energy Ratings (WERs).
What is a U Value?
A U Value will look at a window product and assess how good it is as preventing heat loss or keeping heat in. It is a single measure of performance. The lower the U Value, the more thermally efficient your windows and doors will be.
What is a Window Energy Rating?
Window Energy Ratings essentially do the same, taking the U Value but also looking at solar gain and heat loss. Also in the calculation is whether heat is lost through air penetration in the home.
The Window Energy Rating uses the same label system found on domestic home appliance. Using a colour coded system they can also be identified with A rating being the most energy efficient and G rating being the least.

These state that windows must meet a minimum Window Energy Rating of C or a U Value of 1.6 or less.

Triple glazed windows and doors that are now widely available can achieve U Values as low as 0.7 which is very impressive.
